A Higher Call: An Incredible True Story of Combat and Chivalry in the War-Torn Skies of World War II

(2012) A Higher Call by Adam Makos tells the amazing story of two World War II pilots … Charlie Brown from the USAAF and Franz Stigler from the German Luftwaffe.

You’ve probably heard the story … Charlie Brown’s B-17 was on its last leg when the German fighter pilot pulled up alongside it and tried to guide it to safety. No one really understood what was happening at the time but the pilots were able to find each other decades later. They became good friends and did many interviews.

You can watch a couple of those interviews on the author’s website but don’t do it too soon … you really need to read the book first.

I actually listened to the audiobook in my car so I couldn’t wait to have to go somewhere. Most of the story focuses on the German fighter pilot and his associates … including Galland, Göring, Steinhoff.  In fact, I was driving and crying when the author described Johannes Steinhoff’s fiery crash.

The author did a great service to World War II history when he recorded the words of these two veterans.  They were enemies but to repeat the book’s byline: “An incredible true story of combat and chivalry in the war-torn skies of World War II.”
