Queen’s Head Hotel

The Queen’s Head Hotel in Milton Ernest near Thurleigh Airfield. Originally two 17th century cottages, it is today a friendly and comfortable country inn.

After spending the afternoon at the Imperial War Museum Duxford, my son Johnny and I drove north, around the university town of Cambridge, regretting that we didn’t have time to stop and explore what Forbes Magazine has called one of the world’s most beautiful cities.

Our destination was another hour: the Queen’s Head Hotel in the Bedfordshire hamlet of Milton Ernest.  We found several options for hotels and chose the Queen’s Head because of its proximity to Thurleigh Airfield (just over 3 miles) and because reportedly it was the last place that Glenn Miller was seen in public before he took off from a nearby airport on the night of December 15, 1944. The staff at the Queen’s Head told us that when Miller stayed overnight it would be in a grand house near the hotel … Milton Ernest Hall, now a private nursing home.

We spent a lovely evening at the Queen’s Head and enjoyed an excellent pub meal in their dining room. This must have been a popular destination for the 306th Bomber Group from Thurleigh and also from the other nearby airfields.

A bike ride away, for sure it was one of the watering holes for my Dad, Herman F. Allen, and the Liberty Lady crew.
