Park Close

All we knew was that in 1944  my mother Hedvig Johnson lived at “Park Close” in a 5th-floor apartment. She was so close to Harrod’s department store that on the same night a German bomb hit Harrod’s it blew out her windows too.

I had picked out the spot on Google Maps but was still having some trouble finding it. My son and I were walking from Harrod’s over to Knightsbridge when suddenly there it was.

An iron sign stretched between two buildings fronting a darling alleyway of shops and apartments above.

Park Close.

Today this area is a London shopping paradise. Lots of pubs and restaurants.  I’d love to know more about what it was like during World War II.
