The Devil’s Arithmetic

The Devil’s Arithmetic, WWII movie starring Kirsten Dunst

(1999) This Showtime movie is based on the 1988 award winning historical novel written by prolific American author Jane Yolen. Kirsten Dunst stars as Hannah, a Jewish teenager who lives in New Rochelle, NY. When her family drags her to a Passover Seder she is obviously, almost rudely,  disinterested. When Hannah’s Aunt Eva selects her to symbolically open the door for the prophet Elijah, Hannah walks through the door and finds herself in wartime Poland.

After the Nazis carry Hannah, her friends, and family to a concentration camp she learns what it was like the hard way.

Mimi Rogers played Hannah’s modern mother, and she and Dustin Hoffman were co-producers of this excellent production.
