Merle P. Brown, co-pilot of the Liberty Lady

On September 5th, it was my privilege to interview Merle P. Brown, co-pilot of the Liberty Lady, at his home in Lakeville, Minnesota … just south of Minneapolis. We spoke for more than an hour about “that day” in March of 1944 and the ones prior.

Merle met the Liberty Lady crew in Moses Lake, Washington. From they traveled from the East Coast on the Queen Mary to Scotland, then to Thurleigh. “When we arrived, we had no idea where we were going. They sent us to the 306th.”

In the years since Merle has returned twice to the crash site on the island of Gotland.

The interview was recorded, and I am in the process of transcribing that now.

Amazing to me is that at 92 years old, Merle is in excellent condition and can still talk about the time he spent in World War II. He jogs 20 minutes a day. Nearby is a Senior Center that he frequents, and he is usually the only man there!

Thank you, Merle, for the memories. It is getting harder and harder to find them.
