No Time for Sergeants

No Time for Sergeants, WWII movie(1958) In this laugh-out-loud movie Andy Griffith plays Will Stockdale, a country boy from back-in-the-woods Georgia who gets drafted into the Army Air Forces.  For most of the movie, Will is just trying to get through boot camp.

Before the movie, No Time for Sergeants was a book published in 1954 by author Mac Hyman. Hyman was from Cordele, Georgia, and based the book on his personal experiences during World War II. The best-selling novel became a television play then a popular Broadway production, both starring a new comic actor by the name of Andy Griffith.

It was such a treat to see Andy Griffith in one of his first films (his 2nd to be exact) playing the unforgettable character that made him a star.  The dexterity tester was Don Knotts. He had been on television, but this was his first movie. Don and Andy became close friends and worked together on The Andy Griffith Show in the 1960s.

I found another of my favorite scenes from No Time for Sergeants on YouTube:  Andy/Will has taken over for the plane’s radio operator.
