This Above All, WWII Movie starring Tyrone Power and Joan Fontaine

(1942) A young lady from England’s upper class joins the WAAF, even though her parents object to her fighting the war alongside the common folk. Then what do you know … she falls in love with a handsome commoner who has no idea that she’s from the aristocracy.

Joan Fontaine and Tyrone Power play the lead roles. According to the TCM article, the Hollywood censors were not happy that they went off together for a weekend. It was a little risque for 1942.  I’m sure the “adjoining rooms” didn’t fool anybody in the audience.

This is an American film about the war in England.  After all when it was released (May 1942) the U.S. had barely entered the war. Not to give away the plot line, but there were probably plenty of young men (and their parents) back home who wondered what would happen if they did the unthinkable.

Run away. Desert. Unthinkable.
