Until They Sail, WWII Movie starring Paul Newman and Jean Simmons

(1957) The story of how four sisters in New Zealand survive World War II. Their young men had all been called away to fight for the Allies. When the American troops began to be stationed in New Zealand, they caused quite a stir. The result was 15,000 war brides from New Zealand and Australia.

This movie is based on a short story by James A. Michener.  All four sisters fall in love, but some of their new relationships turn out better than others. Jean Simmons, an established actress, plays one of the sisters who loves an American lieutenant played by Paul Newman.

This was Paul Newman’s sixth film. He had not yet married Joanne Woodward but was living with her in a Malibu beach house. They married in 1958 and were together until his death in 2008. A few years before that the couple bought a home in Roswell, GA,  just a mile or two from where I live. There were Paul Newman sightings at the local Home Depot. Never by me, unfortunately.

Since Newman and Jean Simmons are two of my favorite actors I have designated this movie as a favorite.  This was also the film debut of Sandra Dee, as one of the four, and it was not one bit surprising that she would go on to be a perky and popular star.
