Kungliga Teatern ~ the Royal Theater in Stockholm, 1940’s

At the time this photo postcard was made, the Royal Opera House in Stockholm was known as the Royal Theater, or “Kungliga Teatern.”   It is located in central Stockholm at Gustav Adolf Square and is Sweden’s national stage for opera and ballet.  Since 1997, the official name has been Kungliga Operan, the Royal Opera House.

In 1775 the first performance at that site was given.  Two years King Gustav III commissioned the construction of the first real opera house, and it was spectacular for its day.  Ten years after its inauguration, King Gustav was shot during a masked ball at his very own Opera House, and he died several days later.

That building was demolished in 1892 to make way for the current Opera House with its magnificent gold foyer which opened in 1898.  You can read about the history of the Operan here.

In September of 1944, Hedvig Johnson and Herman Allen attended performances of Russian dance and Hollywood Rhythms. Later they attended a performance of the opera Regementets Dotter, “The Regiment’s Daughter.”

It’s a beautiful place … inside too! (Hedvig Johnson, 1945)
