Operation Pacific, WWII Movie starring John Wayne
(1951) When I started to watch this movie and saw that it starred John Wayne and Patricia Neal, I thought I’d seen it before. Then I remembered that it was In Harm’s Way that the two of them had starred in fourteen years later. I read that on the set of this movie they did not get along. If the scriptwriters had taken the hint and cut out half of the scenes with them together this would have been a better movie. I really enjoyed the parts of the story that were about the submarine crew and was even happier when I learned that many of the events were based on fact. John Wayne plays Duke Gifford, the dedicated commander.
I wonder if it was a coincidence that the main character was named “Duke.” I read that “Duke” was John Wayne’s nickname since he was a boy. No wonder … his real name was Marion.
