Closely Watched Trains, WWII in Czechoslovakia

(1966) As the Germans move in to occupy Czechoslovakia, a young man takes a job as a train station guard. He is far more interested in losing his virginity than he is in the trains.

I didn’t enjoy this movie nearly as much as The Shop on Main Street, another Czechoslovakian film I watched recently. Both were celebrated films, made within a year of each other. Each won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Perhaps it’s more of a guy film.

The ending was a shocker. It was the best part and not just because the movie was over.
