World War II Sweden 2013

Visiting World War II sites in Gotland and Stockholm

Highlights of our 2012 trip to Gotland and Stockholm

Last year my son Johnny and I went on the “Grand Tour” to see where my parents  … Johnny’s grandparents … had spent World War II.   We had an unbelievable 17 day trip. I blogged about it for months. We started in London, then went northwest to the Thurleigh airfield, home of the 306th bombardment group.

Our next stop was Gotland, the little island just off the eastern coast of Sweden where my Dad’s B-17 Liberty Lady crash landed on March 6, 1944.  Several gentlemen who had been there that day and witnessed the events joined us. The nephew of an eyewitness gave me one of the 50 mm shells! Johnny got a piece of the plane too … just small enough to fit in his suitcase flying home.

We ended the trip in Stockholm, Uppsala, Falun and Rättvik. It was a fabulous week of retracing my parents’ footsteps … where in 1944 and 1945 they lived, worked, played, dined and got married.

Mini Grand Tour 2013

Guess what?  In September, I’m going back! My two sisters and brother will come to Sweden with me to revisit Gotland and Stockholm. It will be a shorter trip … a week … and I’m busy mapping out everything we need to see and everything I should have seen last year.

Stay posted!
