(2001) Perhaps “The Majestic” isn’t what you would term a World War II movie but there is definitely a connection. I almost didn’t watch it because I anticipated that Jim Carrey might play one of his characteristic bizarre comedy roles. I couldn’t have been more mistaken. I loved him in this film about a Hollywood screenwriter named Peter Appleton who, in the 1950’s, is accused of being a Communist. After he is told that he will have to testify before Congress, he goes on a long drive and has an accident. His car goes goes over a bridge, and when Peter wakes up, washed ashore, his memory is gone.
He winds up in a small town that is still reeling over the loss of 62 their sons who were killed in the war. The townspeople mistake him for Luke, one of their boys who was missing in action, and the story takes off from there.
I was delighted to see James Whitmore, one of my favorite actors. This was one of his last films. Whitmore died in 2009 at the age of 87. The 2nd movie he made, after serving in the Marine Corps during World War II, was Battleground. I remarked about his standout role here.
Easy to watch, felt just like the ’50’s, and even though it was long (2 1/2 hours) and some of it was predictable I enjoyed it up to the very last scene.
