29 Mar Jan-Olof Nilsson, Swedish filmmaker
Swedish filmmaker and author Jan-Olof Nilsson recently visited me while he and his family were vacationing in south Florida.
Nilsson and I communicated many times over the past several years on the subject of the American Internees in World War II Sweden. He has published two important books about these men: Anrop Red Dog and Lucky Strike. (Both are in Swedish and available for purchase on Adlibris.)
I wrote about Jan-Olof in 2015, after his award-winning documentary film Lucky Strike premiered. Now, the English version is finally available via a U.S. source! Details can be found on Nilsson’s blog site.
During our visit, the two of us exchanged stories as we studied my father’s World War II scrapbooks with photographs of the American internees. Jan-Olof is currently working on at least two more documentary films about the air war and the internees in Sweden. The main American internment camps were at Falun, Rättvik, Gränna, Mullsjö, and Loka Brunn, and Jan-Olof is gathering as much information as possible about Loka Brunn.
If you are interested in learning more about the American Internees in WWII Sweden, join our very active Facebook group! The members’ input, as was Jan-Olof Nilsson’s, was invaluable to my research for Liberty Lady: A True Story of Love and Espionage in WWII Sweden.
