(1940) Spies, spies, spies. You’re never sure who’s who … Boris Karloff is the butler for a cabinet minister who happens to be the father of a handsome pilot who barely survived a dangerous intelligence mission. The pilot ends up in a French hospital and falls in love with his nurse who we soon learn is a German spy.
Just as in America, when World War II broke out British citizens were paranoid about “Secret Agents” (alternative title for this movie) who might be living among them. The trailer describes “A reign of terror on bomb-torn streets. Scotland Yard on guard!” It mattered little that the story actually took place during World War I.
