06 Feb The Proud and Profane
(1956) The widow of a Marine who was killed on Guadalcanal joins the American Red Cross and asks to be assigned to nearby New Caledonia, hoping to learn more about her husband’s death. The Proud and Profane is based a novel by Lucy Herndon Crockett who also worked with the Red Cross in the Pacific. In fact, the most interesting part of the movie was seeing how many different roles the Red Cross ladies filled … entertaining, serving, nursing, mothering.
Or in the case of our leading lady Deborah Kerr, gallivanting around with a unlikable Marine officer played by William Holden.
This movie came one year after From Here to Eternity. Not sure but it might have been the same bathing suit. To make things even more appealing, much of the filming was done in the Virgin Islands.
Thelma Ritter, as the head of the Red Cross ladies, steals the show … but somehow no matter how unlikable or unlikely their characters might be, it was hard to take my eyes off Deborah and William.
