Snow Falling on Cedars, movie starring Ethan Hawke
(1999) Just a few years after World War II a Japanese fisherman stands trial for murder. This is a murder mystery/romance based on the 1994 novel written by David Guterson, a teacher turned author who was born and continues to live in the state of Washington. Snow Falling on Cedars takes place on an island in northern Puget Sound.
At first I thought that this wouldn’t be a World War II movie, but I was wrong. Much of the action takes place during the war and then when it had ended, we see the prejudice that many of the “white people” held toward their Japanese neighbors.
Weather, culture clashes, courtroom, and great photography … all together made this World War II-era love story a favorite.
