08 Jun The Clock
(1945) A soldier on a 48 hour leave in New York City meets a girl who agrees to show him the town. When I read that Judy Garland was the female lead I have to admit I was skeptical. Judy Garland in a non-singing role?
Well, I was wrong. Judy was great. More believable because she wasn’t singing. She played a beautiful young secretary and during the entire movie all I could think of is that she looked just like my mother did at that age as a secretary in Washington, D.C.
I’ve written about Robert Walker before. The year prior to this movie he had a supporting role in David Selznick’s Since You Went Away as Jennifer Jones’ boyfriend. The problem was that although the two of them were married (in real life!) Jennifer was having an affair with Selznick. While The Clock was being filmed, Walker was suffering through the divorce and drinking heavily.
After their work on The Clock was over, Judy Garland married the producer Vincente Minnelli. Robert Walker divorced Jennifer Jones (or, probably it was the other way around) so she could marry Selznick. In 1951, Garland and Minnelli got a divorce and Robert Walker died of a severe reaction to drugs and alcohol.
Hurray for Hollywood.
