One of Our Aircraft is Missing

One of Our Aircraft is Missing, WWII Movie directed, produced and written by The Archers

(1942) After a British bomber is critically damaged over Stuttgart, Germany, the six-man crew bails out over Nazi-occupied Holland. They are helped back to England by the Dutch resistance.

This British film was written, directed and produced by the team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. According to this TCM article, it was made under the authority of the Ministry of Information in order to lift morale in the UK.  It was also the first project the Powell and Emeric did under their partnership name, The Archers.

One of Our Aircraft is Missing was nominated for two Oscars, one for Best Original Screenplay (Powell and Pressburger.) Although it wasn’t a true story per se, according to this interview of Michael Powell, one of the characters was based on an actual person, Sir Arnold Wilson, a member of Parliament who died as an RAF gunner in 1940.

This movie is highly respected as a wartime British film. Inside the bomber as they are headed for Germany I felt that I could be watching the real thing. I am sure the folks from England understood every word but (without closed captions) I did not.  And I am sure those folks cheered during the final boat ride escape.
