10 Mar Betrayed
(1954) A member of Dutch Intelligence, in cooperation with the British, recruits a beautiful woman to spy for the Allies then has to determine whether or not she is a double agent.
Clark Gable is the Dutch agent, and Lana Turner is, of course, the beautiful woman. In the previews, the movie is described as “… an electrifying story of secret love and dangerous adventure.” That should give you a clue.
The story was loosely based on what was happening in the Netherlands during the time of 1944’s Operation Market Garden but the events were far fetched. It was clearly all about Gable and Turner.
The Dutch locations were very picturesque. I always enjoy Victor Mature, and as the resistance fighter “The Scarf” he did not disappoint.
My favorite scene of all was when Lana Turner sang for the German officers a song they all seemed to know, “Johnny Come Home.” I remember thinking that I had no idea she had such a beautiful voice. I tried to find a video on YouTube and in my googling came across this … A singer named Diana Coupland actually sang the song for her. Walter Goehr, a German composer, and Ronald Millar wrote the music and lyrics.
That was still my favorite part.
