(1942) A small Norwegian village is traumatized when the Nazis move in.
Esteemed actor Paul Muni plays the lead role as the quiet widower who forms a Resistance Group. According to a TCM article, he was determined to do this movie in an effort to help the war effort.
Commandos Strike at Dawn was based on a short story by English author C.S. Forester who was famous for his Horatio Hornblower novels. He also wrote The African Queen (1935), later made into a movie and Hunting the Bismark (1959), the foundation for the 1960 Sink the Bismark.
When this movie came out the movie-going public already had some idea of what was happening in Norway … they just didn’t know how bad it was still going to get.
