(1955) The Germans assemble their most incorrigible prisoners of war in Colditz Castle, a high security “inescapable” fortress.
This British film is based on a book by Pat Reid, a British army officer who was there and did escape in 1942. The castle was finally liberated by US troops on April 15, 1945, by the way.

Compared to other movies I have seen about POW’s the conditions depicted were not so bad. The prisoners had a lot of freedom and also some fun, many times at the expense of the Nazi guards.
At the beginning of the movie, there is a notice which reads that “Every incident in the film you are about to see is true ...” Not only that, Major Reid acted as technical advisor. That is what makes this such an enjoyable story.
Today you can tour “Schloss Colditz” and see escape artifacts. The castle is located near Dresden.
