(1948) Call it Treason by George Howe … German prisoners of war are recruited to return to Germany as an agent to collect information on Germany military activities. This is the book that inspired the 1951 movie Decision Before Dawn. When I first watched the movie in 2010 I immediately ordered the book … and finally, I’ve read it.
I was so curious about the author. The book has so much detail about both American and German activities, the towns, the roads and bridges that I felt sure he had been somehow personally involved.
At this author’s site I found a short biography of George Howe. Yes, he did serve with the OSS, G-2, U.S. Seventh Army, same as described in the book, and was “responsible for documentation and cover stories.”
The book reads almost like a documentary. I was all caught up with the main characters, the Germans we meet along the way … some good, some bad.
The book is dedicated to “Happy 1925-1945,” the main character of the book. Happy was the German prisoner of war who volunteered to go back into Germany to gather information that would help the Allies. He wanted to build a new and better Germany.
