24 Jan The Glenn Miller Story
(1954) The story of bandleader Glenn Miller’s career from the early days when he was getting his trombone in and out of hock up through World War II. He was struggling to find “that special sound,” and he finally did it.
What can I say? The movie was a huge success. Of course … Glenn Miller’s big band sound was the music of America during the late 1930’s and up into World War II.
In 1942, Miller joined the Army and eventually formed the Army Air Force Band which he took to England in 1944. He announced, “This is Glenn Miller … coming to you from Buzz Bomb Alley courtesy of the BBC.”
In December of 1944 Miller was on his way to Paris when his plane was lost over the English Channel December 14-15. In the movie, I thought the scenes about his disappearance were awkward. I’m sure there was no good way to do them.
On the evening that Glenn Miller was scheduled to play in Paris, my father-in-law John DiGeorge, US Army, was in the audience waiting for him to perform when the announcement was made that he would not be there to perform.
Through the years, many theories have been proposed as to what happened to this American icon. Just do a google and you can read about it for hours.
According to their official website The Glenn Miller Orchestra is still touring today.
