09 Jan Counter-Espionage
(1942) A reformed jewel thief tracks down Nazi spies in London during the Blitz. He is a well known to Scotland Yard as the “Lone Wolf.” What I didn’t realize is that there were many films made around this character, based on eight Lone Wolf novels by American novelist Louis Joseph Vance.
I was so surprised when I learned that this is not a British film. While I was watching it I assumed that I was actually seeing London during the bombings with actual air raid sirens and the underground shelters. Not so.
The director was Edward Dmytryk who in the late 1940’s was sent to jail for refusing to cooperate with the House Committee on Un-American Activities.
To be honest, I had a hard time getting through this one. Wikipedia called it a comedy, but I wasn’t laughing.
