06 Jan Twin Sisters
(2002) In 1926 Berlin twin sisters, suddenly orphaned, go to live with different distant relatives and grow up in very different environments, politically and socially. This Dutch film (known as De Tweeling) is based on the 1993 novel The Twins by popular Dutch author Tessa de Loo.
To separate twins is bad enough but the real tragedy happened when they reunited years later and found that they had grown up on opposing sides of the war. The ending, the final resolution, was hard to believe but after all … it’s a movie.
I enjoyed watching Twin Sisters. I’m sure the experiences of these two girls were very familiar to many European families who lived through the Nazi occupations and found themselves trying to cope with their diverse situations. On Wikipedia, I read that the Jewish Chronicle remarked “A thought provoking film, raises big questions about responsibility for the Holocaust and what ordinary individuals do when faced with extraordinary evil”.
