14 Dec Till the End of Time
(1946) Till the End of Time shows how three Marines just back from World War II struggle to adapt to life back home. It was based on the novel They Dreamed of Home by Niven Busch. This movie came out earlier in the same year as The Best Years of Our Lives, which had a similar theme.
The veterans struggled, and so did their families … trying to understand, often not successfully. The main character played by heartthrob Guy Madison falls in love with a war widow who is also having a hard time adjusting to her loss. I’m sure that in 1946, most Americans found something to relate to in this movie.
The director Edward Dmytryk ended up marrying one of the female leads, Jean Porter, who played the girl who lived next door to Guy Madison. Dmytryk actually spent time in prison for contempt of Congress during the McCarthy era. He went on to direct The Caine Mutiny and The End of the Affair.
It was interesting to watch the scenes with the veteran’s discharge officer who helps them during their early months at home. I wonder if this was as effective in reality as it was in the movie.
