23 Nov Good
(2008) In 1930’s Berlin, a college professor named John Halder is considered to be a good man but somehow, with reluctance, joins the Nazi Party and ends up working for Adolf Eichmann.
Oh, and he also leaves his wife and children to marry one of his students.
His best friend is/was a Jewish psychiatrist who finally sees that he needs to get out of town and begs Halder to help him.
I really wanted to like this movie. It is based on a stage play by C.P. Taylor, a British playwright, that first came out in 1981. Although it held my interest I think it is only because I kept thinking that something “good” would happen.
The New York Times reviewer hit the nail on the head I think. The final scene in a concentration camp was not at all convincing.
The best part of the movie was when Halder found out that his trophy wife had betrayed his Jewish friend. I hope he was leaving her for “good.”
