FDR

FDR, biography by Jean Edward Smith

(2007) The life of Franklin Delano Roosevelt by Jean Edward Smith, a university professor and a well known biographer.

I actually listened to the audio book, in fact twice already. The good news (and bad news for some books) is that when you’re listening to a book you get all of it. It’s not easy to skip ahead or read the ending first.

I loved this book so much the first time that I wanted to go through it again … from Roosevelt’s childhood through his polio through his early political career through the New Deal and then to the White House and World War II.

FDR’s polio had such a strong influence on his life. As did the fact that he spent so much time in Warm Springs, GA at the Little White House there, where he got to know a whole segment of society that he had never encountered in his privileged existence as Sarah’s son.

The end of his story of course were the years of World War II. Roosevelt was elected four times because the country had faith in his ability to get us through it, and he did.  Almost to the very end.
