14 Sep Glorious 39
(2009) It was the summer of 1939 in England … the weather was glorious, and so were the high society parties. War was not yet a certainty, and there was a large contingent who wanted to avoid war at any cost, even if that meant dealing with Hitler.
This is a story of a young lady who was adopted as a baby into an aristocratic family that is deeply involved in the politics of the day. It was interesting to me that the storyline revolved around the conflict between those who wanted appeasement and those who were ready to go to war against Nazi Germany.
Our heroine gets caught right in the middle of it.
“Glorious 39” is described as a dark thriller. It was only “thrilling” at the end and to me a bit preposterous, with a Titanic-like ending … but yes, I did enjoy it. I loved watching how the English upper crust lived with their intense focus on their social standing. The scenery and the estate homes were, well … glorious!
It was only after the film was over that I learned that Julie Christie was “Aunt Elizabeth.” Never recognized her, even after I knew.
