27 Jul Torpedo Run
(1958) The Captain of a WWII submarine is obsessed with hunting down the fictional Shinaru, a Japanese aircraft carrier that aided in the attack on Pearl Harbor. What happens is devastating.
I have watched plenty of submarine stories. I am drawn to them though I’m not sure why. Three of my favorites are Run Silent, Run Deep, The Enemy Below and Destination Tokyo. In the last, filmed in 1943, the submarine also slipped through the net into Tokyo Bay.
The movie received an academy award for Best Visual Effects. They obviously used miniatures, but I suppose that for the time they were effective. My favorite segment was when the crew had to escape their fatally damaged sub by swimming to the surface using Momsen lungs, breathing devices used for emergency escapes.
Perhaps the reason I didn’t enjoy watching it is because I kept hoping for that miracle ending.
The stars were Glenn Ford and Ernest Borgnine. It was an early film for Dean Jones. Glenn Ford was in personal agony for most of the movie. I read that he was married four times, divorced four times, and didn’t get along with any of this ex-wives. The first divorce came just a year after this movie. Guess he never got over it.
