Night and Day, WWII era movie starring Cary Grant

(1946) Okay, not a World War II movie … This is a story of the life of Cole Porter. Some of the details are true (he did go to Yale, and his grandfather did want him to become a lawyer) and some are not.  I’m not sure the story even progressed into the 1940’s.

None of that matters because Cary Grant was Cole Porter, and the songs are fabulous. I am sure the production numbers are reminiscent of how they were staged on Broadway.  Mary Martin played herself singing, “My Heart Belongs to Daddy,” the Porter song that made her famous in the 1938 production of “Leave it to Me!”

I kept hoping I would see Porter in Paris, as depicted in the 2011 Woody Allen movie “Midnight in Paris,” where I understand he was active in the gay underground. Of course, no hint of that in 1946, and Porter himself was a consultant on the movie set.

I enjoyed every minute of it. Who wouldn’t?  Cary Grant and Cole Porter’s most famous songs.
