Goering’s List, WWII Novel by J.C. Pollock

(1993) Goering’s List is a novel written by J.C. Pollock.  I found practically nothing about this author except that he was a former intelligence officer (from Library Journal review on Amazon) and that he has written under another name, James Elliott, as discussed here.

I found Goering’s List in the Used Book room at my local library. I usually walk through to see what they might have related to World War II. The title is what made me pick it up, and once I started to read it I was hooked.

A former SS officer travels to the mountain retreat called Obersalzberg, above Berchtesgaden, where the Nazi leadership had homes. He has made plans to meet his estranged son  to hand over a treasure he has kept secret since the war ended, a list of the art treasures stolen and amassed by Goering (AKA Göring) during the war.

From that point on, everyone seems to want this list … the CIA (formerly the Office of Strategic Services which originally worked on restoring the works of art to their rightful owners,) the Russians, the Israelis, an ex-East German terrorist, and who knows who else.  It wasn’t easy in the beginning to keep track.

I enjoyed the book and the intricate details of post-World War II espionage.

And here is another National Archives article about the Nazi-looted art.
