10 Jun Above Suspicion
(1943) The year is 1939. Newlyweds (Fred MacMurray and Joan Crawford) are convinced by a former classmate who is now with the British Foreign Office to take off on a honeymoon trip through pre-war Germany and Austria to track down a scientist who has critical information about a Nazi superweapon.
I enjoyed watching this clever spy caper even though:
- I was never quite sure who was on whose side. Suppose that was intentional.
- I never saw much chemistry between the newlyweds.
- I thought Joan Crawford looked a lot older than Fred McMurray (she was older but only by 3 years.)
- Ms. Crawford was 38. This should have been a 2nd honeymoon trip for them.
The movie was based on the book by Helen MacInnes, who was famous for writing espionage novels. It was fun to watch, and I felt the suspense at the end.
The concentration camp “Dachau” was mentioned but of course at the time the film was made, few people really knew …
