28 Apr The Wooden Horse
(1950) I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this British film about a creative escape plan from the German POW camp Stalag Luft III. Often the only time I get to watch my WWII movies is while I am walking on the treadmill. It took me four days to finish The Wooden Horse, and I could hardly wait to start it again. It is a true story, based on the book of the same name by Eric Williams, one of the escapees.
Incidentally, Stalag Luft III is the same camp where “The Great Escape” took place. Because this particular camp was run by the Luftwaffe, the treatment and facilities were better than at others. (That doesn’t include treatment of escapees who were later caught.)
I don’t want to give anything away, but I’ll just mention that someone ended up in Sweden after traveling by boat from Denmark. The last scene was at a restaurant, possibly Stockholm or even Göteborg, the city on the west coast where the little boat landed. The Nazis were there as well as the member of the British Legation. In the center was set up a fabulous smorgasbord. That was my favorite part.
