19 Apr Swedish Newspaper
Last year I asked Ian Engblom, a Swedish college student who in 2006-2007 was a member of our Georgia Rotary Student Program, to translate this 1944 newspaper article for me. This was before I discovered Google translate, which, by the way, is not nearly as good as Ian!
Playing craps in the top left photo is Herman Allen, American internee and bombardier of the B-17 Liberty Lady. In the bottom left photo flanking the elder gentleman is Stan Buck, navigator of the Liberty Lady and Herman Allen.
The Translation
To their latest meeting “Stockholm Post” #1 invited one of the in Sweden newly arrived emergency landed American airmen, who in the below picture are seen flanking the oldest of the Swedish legionaries, Mr. Nils Dahlström. He is 81 years old and participated in the Spanish-American war. Above the guests properly ended up on their mother’s street (they probably mean that they should be feeling as at home), they are playing the popular American game “craps” together with their Swedish colleagues.
In America the legionnaires wear a uniform with a blue jacket, blue shirt, yellow tie and a blue boat cap with the local unit’s name and number. The only one in “Stockholm Post” who has such a uniform is their commander, merchant Evert Bosson, who in 1939 returned to Sweden after 27 years in the USA.
