36 Hours, WWII Movie starring James Garner and Rod Taylor

(1965) When I began to watch this WWII movie, I realized that I had seen it before.  I knew how it would end and I still wanted to watch it again.

James Garner plays an intelligence officer who has been briefed on the details of the D-Day invasion.  Nevertheless, he travels to Lisbon during the week prior.  Naturally, the Germans are going to go to great lengths to learn the specific and accurate details of what is going to happen and that’s what the story is all about.

James Garner was the American, and Rod Taylor was the German doctor who has spearheaded an elaborate scheme to make Garner believe that he has had amnesia for six years.  The war is over, and “Let’s see how much you remember …”  They both did great jobs, as did Eva Marie Saint, Garner’s “nurse.”

I liked that “36 Hours” was directed by George Seaton who also directed “The Counterfeit Traitor,” one of my favorites.

Well, the New York Times reviewer called this film “contrived.”  Okay …  I admit it was a fantasy, but like “Inglourious Basterds” it was glorious to see how it all turned out.
