Battle Cry, WWII Movie starring Van Heflin and Tab Hunter

(1955) This tribute to the U. S. Marine Corps is the story of a group of Marines from boot camp through training and on into battle.  There is as much about their love lives as about the war. I’m sure that’s how the writers intended on attracting viewers.

The film is based on the best-seller of the same name by Leon Uris, and I read that it is based on his own experiences as a Marine during WWII.  I suspected as much because one of the characters was always reading a book and wanted to become a writer after the way.

James Whitemore, one of my favorites, is Sergeant Mac, their hands on leader. He also does the narrations to let us know what’s happening as they move from spot to spot.

It’s an enjoyable story. Tab Hunter was adorable. He was very popular at the time, and at the end of the movie you’re not sure if he made it or not.  Probably caused some hysteria in the theater.
