13 Feb Fires on the Plain
(1959) Robert Osborne of Turner Classic Movies introduced this TCM Import as a Japanese film directed by Kon Ichikawa, “… not well known here in the states … a filmmaker responsible for many powerful movies and someone whose work you should really get to know.” So I watched it.
The year is 1945. The Japanese army on Leyte in the Philippines is on its last leg. This is a huge contrast to the movies we’ve seen that show the Japanese soldiers brutalizing Americans. This movie shows a different side of the Japanese as they found themselves sinking into a world where their choices are cannibalism (yes, I said it) and suicide.
I do okay with subtitles, so that was not an issue. The black and white photography kept me going.
There was nothing else that I enjoyed.
