10 Jan The Mountain Road
(1960) Jimmy Stewart plays a demolition expert who leads a team assigned to blow up roads and bridges in China so that the Japanese cannot get through. The theme of the movie seems to be the “power” that Stewart’s character receives with his command and abuses as he moves up the road.
The movie was not filmed in China, but it is based on a book written by Theodore White, who reported from and wrote about China during the war. The movie showed the sad plight of the Chinese villagers as they were running from the Japanese.
Update May 16, 2011: The technical advisor for this film was Frank A. Gleason, a member of OSS China. He was the head of the demolition crew on which White’s story was based. I met Col. Gleason on Roswell Rotary Club’s May 10th Honor Air Atlanta trip to Washington, D.C.
