(2001) The description for this movie reads “During World War II, a British queen works with an unlikely group of agents on a deadly mission …”
I thought, no way… Queen Mother Elizabeth? I soon realized that we’re talking about a different type of queen.
So although I really didn’t want to watch a comedy, the lead role (Matt LeBlanc, so easy to watch) identifies himself early on as OSS, and I was hooked.
It was a fun movie with lots of laughs, and tension also, as these undercover men dressed in drag go behind the lines into Berlin to steal an enigma machine. The Allies don’t want the Germans to know that they’ve already broken the enigma code, so they keep trying to steal it.
The movie didn’t do well, I’ve read, and I’m sure it’s because the combination of WWII, enigma code, OSS, and dressing in drag just didn’t sit right. The publicity photograph did not inspire me to want to watch the movie. The large picture should be of the undercover men before they get all dressed up.
But I’ll have to admit … I laughed out loud and enjoyed watching it.
