06 Jan The Safecracker
(1958) I do like Ray Milland. So suave, such charm. So, during the first half of this British movie, in which he is the lead and the director, I was wondering … why? Why this story that seems to be going nowhere?
The Safecracker was made in 1958. I kept checking and rechecking that detail. To me, it was more like a movie in the early 1940’s. But perhaps that was the idea because the action takes place beginning in the late ’30’s when Milland’s character, the best safecracker in Britain, begins to use his skill in the wrong way and ends up in prison.
In the second half of the movie (I had almost given up) things begin to get interesting. He is recruited by the British War Office to train for a dangerous mission in Nazi-occupied Belgium. In exchange … his freedom!
The ending was the best part of the movie. Or I should say, his Mom was.
