Schindler’s List

It’s Hebrew, it’s from the Talmud. It says, “Whoever saves one life, saves the world entire.”

(1993) Steven Spielberg directed this masterful movie, the true story about Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who was able to save more than a thousand Jews during World War II.

Of course, I watched this movie years ago. It had greater impact this time. I really connected with the Jewish families as they were forced to leave their homes in Poland for the ghetto and then as their horrors increased.

Liam Neeson was a beautiful man at 41. He played Schindler as the person he really was, a factory owner who profited from shady business practices. In the end and at the cost of his personal fortune he was compelled to do the right thing.  Ralph Fiennes played the vile Amon Goeth, the SS officer whose cruelty could not be explained. In the end he was hung.  Both actors were nominated for Academy Awards, and this movie propelled both careers. The movie Schindler’s List and Steven Spielberg won their Oscars.  Well deserved.

At the end of the war, the Jewish workers are released from the factory and a Russian officer tells them: “You have been liberated by the Soviet army!”

… “Where should we go?”

… The Russian officer answers: “Don’t go east, that’s for sure. They hate you there. I wouldn’t go west either, if I were you.”
