Lisa (or The Inspector) starring Stephen Boyd and Dolores Hart

(1962)  In 1946 Holland, a young girl who barely survived Auschwitz concentration camp is desperate to reach Palestine.  The British will not give her legal access, but despite that and against all odds a Dutch inspector helps her. The movie is also known as “The Inspector” but for sure it’s all about Lisa.

When she was at Auschwitz she was the victim of (most likely) Dr. Mengele’s atrocious surgical procedures. All we know is that the operations rendered her unable to have a sexual relationship. In 1962, even alluding to that was probably risky.

Stephen Boyd is the inspector, and the young girl Lisa is played by the beautiful Dolores Hart. I remembered that Dolores Hart became a nun. What I didn’t realize was that it happened only one year after this movie was released. She has said that “Lisa” is the film she’s most proud of, playing a Jewish girl who had survived the Nazis’ death camp.

The movie was filmed in Amsterdam, London, Tangiers, and Israel. I loved some of the interiors … Two things though I wondered about. I figured that Lisa had been out of the concentration camp for about a year. She was beautiful, her hair was full and perfectly styled.  Just didn’t seem realistic to me.

Stephen Boyd was working as a boatman. When he arrived in port you’d see him dressed to the nines with an impeccably starched white shirt.  Now where did that come from?

I enjoyed the movie. Perhaps it helped Dolores Hart make her final decision to enter the abbey.  You can read an interview by the Catholic News Service made just last year.
