Malta Story

Malta Story, WWII Movie starring Alec Guinness and Jack Hawkins

(1953) This British film is based on the defense of Malta, the little island which was critically located just south of Sicily and east of North Africa. The Germans and Italians bombed Malta relentlessly but to no avail.  Malta Story particularly interested me when I read that there was so much authentic combat footage and that many scenes were shot right there. This 1942 photo could have come out of the film.

That being said, I found it a little hard to follow the story details. Sometimes the Brits are as hard to understand as any foreign language.

Alec Guinness was our hero as a Spitfire fighter pilot/photographer. He seemed a lot younger than the role he would play four years later as Lt. Nicholson in The Bridge on the River Kwai.

I’m glad I watched it until the end.  That was the best and the worst part of the story.
