In the Presence of Mine Enemies

In the Presence of Mine Enemies, WWII Holocaust Movie set in the November 1942 Warsaw Ghetto

(1997) Poland, November 1942. The family of a Rabbi struggles to endure the horrors of Nazi cruelty during the last days of the Warsaw Ghetto.

As I watched In the Presence of Mine Enemies I wondered if it had originally been a play.  But no, it originally aired on Showtime, based on the 1960 script written by Rod Serling for his “Playhouse 90” television series. That episode starred Charles Laughton and an unknown 24-year-old Robert Redford.

Chad Lowe (younger brother of Rob Lowe … confused me at first) plays the German sergeant with a conscience.

In this article on the Rod Serling website you can read about why this script was so important to the writer best known for science fiction. The story revolves around the Rabbi’s struggles with his conscience, his family, his wretched reality.  It would be a good movie to watch with your family and then have a discussion afterwards.
