A Secret

A Secret, WWII French Movie based on the book by Philippe Grimbert

(2007) A French film about a Jewish boy in WWII Paris who stumbles onto his parents’ secret and tragic past. The movie is based on the award winning 2004 autobiographical novel Un Secret by French psychoanalysit and author Philippe Grimbert.

The story is told through flashbacks and flashforwards, and there is always a little boy. Our young hero was born in 1948, as was Philippe Grimbert.

It’s a haunting story. You have to pay attention because of the subtitles, but you’ll want to anyway.

The very end of the movie takes place outside the estate of Pierre Laval, the French former Prime Minister who through his position of leadership in the Vichy Regime signed orders permitting the deportation of  Jews to the Nazi death camps.
