The Four Days of Naples

The Four Days of Naples, WWII Italian Movie

(1962) This Italian movie is the story of the 1943 four day uprising when the people of Naples rebel and force the Germans out of their city. The Italian title is Le Quattro giornate di Napoli.

My favorite WWII movie critic, Bosley Crowther of the New York Times, described it as a “historical re-enactment … Almost every shot in every sequence is packed with eloquence and meaning.”

Nominated for two Academy Awards, The Four Days of Naples is an important tribute to the brave Italian people’s revolt. It was filmed in Naples, right where it happened.

The version I watched was in Italian with subtitles.  I think I would have been able to follow along better if I had seen the version dubbed in English as in the original trailer below.

Watch an original trailer on the Turner Classic Movies website.
