Out of the Ashes

Out of the Ashes, WWII Movie starring Christine Lahti

(2003) Dr. Gisella Perl was a Jewish gynecologist living in Hungary who was sent to Auschwitz concentration camp. There she was put to work in the infirmary where she had almost no equipment and where she was forced to work under Dr. Mengele, the sadistic “Angel of Death.”

This powerful made-for-TV movie is based on her book I Was a Doctor in Auschwitz. It is the compelling story of the life of Dr. Perl, played beautifully by Christine Lahti.

I thought the three gentlemen (Beau Bridges, Bruce Davison, Richard Crenna) who grilled the doctor about her activities in the “camp” were overly smug and wondered if they were so cavalier after the war when these interviews actually took place.

Camps? This is what you call Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen in America? Camps? Places to send your children on a holiday? (Dr. Perl to her INS interviewers)

Here is a detailed history of Gisella Perl and her experiences at Auschwitz.

So sad, just made me weep for this woman/doctor. Who could EVEN judge her. RIP DR. Pearl.
