Bitter Victory

Bitter Victory, WWII Movie starring Richard Burton

(1958) “Bitter Victory” was based on the novel “Amre Victoire” by René Hardy, a member of the French Resistance during WWII who was later accused of being a traitor.  From the little I’ve read, it sounds like he died with his secrets.

Director Nicholas Ray had already read the novel about two officers stationed in Cairo, assigned to a dangerous mission. They are training to raid General Rommel’s headquarters in Benghazi (Libya) and steal some important documents. One problem is, one of them  (Curd Jürgens) is married to the former lover of the other (Richard Burton.)  The other problem is the unforgiving desert.  Amazingly, author René Hardy traveled from Europe to Los Angeles to consult on the script.

Richard Burton looked great.  This was 4 or 5 years before Cleopatra and Elizabeth.

The movie was okay but to be honest I think I’d rather see a movie about  René Hardy’s life!
